The increasing requirements for side head protection systems demand new technologies. This papers outlines new technologies on the fabric side like an innovative kind of sewing. At present, there are two different kinds of producing a bag: sewed bag and woven bag (OPW). The sewed bags are made of upper and lower layer and their connection. The connection of the layers is made by seams with sewing threads. The sewing of headbags is a considerable cost factor in the bag production. By using the Jacquard technique it is possible to weave a bag in one part (OPW). Both variants generally just distinguish from each other by the process used to create the seam, but any direct connection of upper and lower layer of the bag results compulsorily of the chamber depth against 0 in the protection area. The aim when designing a bag is a constant chamber depth throughout the whole protection area. A constant chamber depth can be reached by inwoven tethers in the bag. This new kind of weave technique enables the production of a bag with constant chamber depth throughout the whole passenger protection area. The chamber depth can be regulated by the tether diameter. To reach a long lasting inner pressure of the bag, it is necessary to reduce the permeability of the bag fabric. By increasing the silicon coating on the fabric, the air permeability can be reduced. But the application system of the silicon has its limits. A leak proof bag is not imaginable with the usual coating system. The solution must be a new coating. With this coating, a surface film is laminated on the fabric surface. An adhesive film connects the surface film with the fabric. The laminated OPW shows the same behaviour like the silicon coated bag up to about 100 milliseconds. The inwoven tethers and the foil coating of fabrics show the fabric-technical direction of future side head protection systems.
