In June 2001 Toyota Motor Corporation developed the Toyota Hybrid System-CVT (THS-C) for mini-vans. The THS-C hybrid system has the following features: 1. A reduced dependency on electric motor power yields further compactness and lower cost. A torque increase mechanism with CVT and control of the drive power source, enhance driving performance. A 4WD system, most desired for mini-vans, has been adopted. An electric 4WD system exhibits improved fuel economy in four-wheel regeneration and ordinary FWD operation. To achieve these features, a new transaxle was designed and developed for the front drive unit of the THS-C system. The structure of the transaxle and the drive power switching mechanism (power management system) are described in the paper. High efficiency was the most important theme in the development of the transaxle for hybrid vehicles. By using an electric motor-driven oil pump, fuel economy could be improved. Both mechanical losses and motor energy consumption were reduced. By reducing oil consumption at the transaxle the motor speed could be reduced. The torque loss technologies were used to improve transmission efficiency. The use of compact lightweight and high-efficiency technologies has resulted in excellent fuel economy performance. Excellent driving comfort has been achieved by the smooth speed change feature of the Super-CVT and the unique control scheme of THS-C highly cooperating with the engine, the motor and the clutches.
