An LCA (life cycle assessment) study was performed based on environmental data for 400-g packages of frozen cod fillets to evaluate fishery-specific environmental impacts in the Baltic Sea. The inventory included target, by-catch and discard species, seafloor effects, the use of antifouling paints, ice production and fishing gear material, fuel emissions, and data for the life cycle after fishery. The results showed that fishery is the main contributor to a number of environmental impact categories in the life cycle of the seafood product investigated. The environmental performance of the product was affected by energy-saving measures. In order to reduce the environmental impact, it was found to be important to fish sustainably managed stocks. It was shown that sustainability of fishery can also be improved by modifying current fishery practices and developing more efficient fisheries. The first option involved gear modifications and fuel-saving vessel operation. The most important measure to decrease the environmental impact after landing was shown to maintain high product quality and to reduce product losses.
