Aluminum usage in automobiles has increased significantly over the last two decades. This increase has come about due to automakers' recognition of aluminum's inherent ability to provide better fuel efficiency while enhancing safety and performance. Additionally, technological developments, in the alloy design and manufacturing of aluminum products as well as in their application at the automakers plants, have made aluminum a viable substitute for steel. 6022-T4E29 automotive sheet, a product that was developed and commercialized to meet the requirements of automotive closure panel applications, will be discussed in this study. 6022-T4E29 will be compared to other automotive sheet alloys that are currently employed for closure panel applications and will be reviewed in light of automotive sheet performance requirements.
