The notion of globally optimizing vehicle flow in a car production line is examined. The present information system architecture may be qualified as being a reactive heterarchical architecture. In order to optimize operations, the system was transformed by using a succession of independent scheduling agents. With a view to improving quality and reducing costs, the company wishes to widen the scheduling power of each scheduling agent. This strategic choice was modeled not by using a reactive heterarchical type architecture, but a holonic architecture type. A formalization in the shape of an interaction matrix based on the notion of interaction was proposed with the intention of analyzing performance robustness of a holonic system (global parameterization vectors) compared to a reactive heterarchical system (vectors of local parameterization). The advantage of this matrix formalization is that it can express all the different cases, obviously according to the degree to which the variables are discretized. The formalization enabled to express and to formalize the problem in the form of vectors (set of control parameters), representing a standard parameterization of a factory (composed of 3 stocks). Different scenarios were simulated according to the risks and the input mix. A significant variation in risk seems to show clearly that the system is especially sensitive to this, whereas the input mix seems a lot less sensitive. It was shown that a so-called holonic system is a priori more robust than a reactive heterarchical system.
