This paper reviews recent research work on the erosion-corrosion of AISI 304L stainless steel in alkaline and chloride containing slurries at room temperature using a slurry jet impingement erosion-corrosion facility. Gravimetrie results from experiments quantifying the pure erosion (E), pure corrosion (C) and the combined erosion-corrosion (T) levels for sand slurries of pH 10 and 11.3 are analysed. The influence of chloride levels between 0 and 6000 ppm are presented and results compared to those obtained using a pH 10 slurry jet on AISI 316L stainless steel. Erosion-corrosion performance of 304L for pH 10 and various chloride (500 to 6000 ppm) containing slurries showed a slight decrease in erosion-corrosion rate with increasing chloride content. Overall, the erosion-corrosion rates are between zero and 10 % lower than the pure erosion rates and compared to the overall damage rates can be regarded as insignificant. Erosion and erosion-corrosion performance of 304L was 20 % better than 316L for low chloride content but this advantage was lost at higher chloride concentrations.
