Increasing requirements for improved environmental compliance and collision safety have brought greater demand than ever before for a manual transmissions (MT) to contribute to improved fuel economy, lighter weight and increased compactness, as well as for MT operability that allows drivers the shift gears lightly and rapidly as they please. An MT has been developed for FF cars that is matched with the lightweight, high-efficiency, next-generation i-VTEC engine. Development objectives were: 1. Friction and weight achieved with the 6MT were to be equal to or better than Honda's conventional 5MT of the same class in order to improve fuel economy. 2. The transmission allows drivers to shift gears lightly and rapidly as they please up to the allowable input speed of 8600 rpm. 3. The total length of the transmission was to be reduced 20 mm relative to Honda's conventional 5MT of the same class and the basic form was to be shareable with 4WD in order to respond to diversifying needs for individual vehicles by improving the adaptability and mountability of the new transmission. The fuel economy improvement technology is described. The improvement in shift operability is outlined: 1. high-capacity synchronizers, 2. shortened stroke in synchronizer, 3. reverse inhibitor system for use with the 6 MT, 4. high-efficiency linkage for reverse shifting. The suitability for use with various different models and types is described. The 2WD-6MT and 5MT versions of the developed transmission have been installed in the new model INTEGRA and the 4WD-5MT version has been installed in the new model CR-V. There are also several models for the US/EU markets that have been equipped with this transmission.
