The authors propose a mathematical modelling of non-equilibrium hypersonic flows based on Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics. For a multireacting gas mixture with an arbitrary number of internal degrees in non-equilibrium the Euler, Gibbs and Gibbs-Duhem equations are reformulated removing the local equilibrium assumption, and including all generalised fluxes of any tensorial order as independent variables of the internal energy. The bridge between the non-equilibrium thermodynamic model and the balance equations for the extensive thermo-fluid-dynamic properties is obtained by introducing generalised relations for the entropy flux and the entropy production, that lead to nonlinear evolution equations for the generalised fluxes. New phenomenological coefficients are introduced, whose physical meaning is identified by means of direct comparison with the results of microscopic theories; then, a non-dimensional methodology for evaluating the relative orders of magnitude of these new effects is proposed and a first estimate of the flight path segment of re-entry vehicles, where such corrections give appreciable engineering contribution, is performed
