Nowadays modelling and simulation are extensively used to accelerate and improve the design process of mechatronic systems. Due to the complexity of these systems, specific CAE tools are required for designing end optimising the overall system performance as well as its components which combine parts from miscellaneous physical domains. However, these modelling activities are often isolated from each other mainly due to incompatible modelling approaches end languages. In this thesis, a suitable design process based on a Systems Engineering approach is proposed end different types of models are associated to the different design tasks. Then, a CAE environment based on a tool-independent simulation library is used in order to support the flow of information among models created with different simulation tools. Finally, some model simplification techniques suitable for non-linear network models are discussed. All the proposed methods are illustrated by means of realistic examples of the Common-Rail lnjection System.
