This paper presents development and testing of a robust, individual, real-time, closed-loop blade control methodology for rotor vibration suppression using piezoactuated trailing-edge flaps and active twist tip rotors. The controller uses a neural network to learn to actuate the trailing-edge flap, thus adaptively suppressing the blade or hub vibrations. Two different of Mach-scaled smart rotor models, the first one with piezoactuated trailing flaps and the second one with piezo plus bending-torsion coupling actuated blade tips, controlled by the same adaptive neurocontrol algorithm, were tested successfully in hover and demonstrated their effectiveness in open-loop. The first tests conducted with the first model were to demonstrate the neurocontroller learning to counter the background vibrations arising from the nontracked rotor. In these tests the neurocontroller was shown to reduce the total vibrational energy by 73%. Moreover, the controller has achieved a broadband reduction in vibration, exhibited by significant reductions up to 5 rev-1. The second tests were to demonstrate the neurocontroller inducing vibratory loads at specific frequencies as would be necessary for vibration reduction of the rotor in forward flight situations. The neurocontroller canceled the 1 rev-1 and 3 rev-1 background vibration while simultaneously inducing the desired 2 rev-1 load. The final tests carried out with the second rotor model was to demonstrate that the new controller could actually operate independently of the specific actuator. In the background suppression test the controller was shown to reduce the vibration by 98 %, and a multifrequency load test demonstrated that the controller learns a broad spectrum input to achieve the control task.
