There is one area that is crucially important to all companies whose products include some proportion of software and electronics and that is the software development process. The economy of this process has a major influence on the economy of the company as a whole. There are several objectives that the software development process has to achieve: innovation, quality and productivity. Taking any one of these objectives, it seems that it can only be achieved by actions that make it harder for the others to be achieved. There is of course no magic formula that solves these conflicts. However, deployment of suitable procedures will help in controlling the process and achieving targeted improvements in it.
