The NREC has developed a robot to strip paint from large ships. Removal of corrosion and coatings from large vessels has become a serious economic and environmental problem and current practices will not be feasible much longer. The M2000 robot removes paint from ships using ultra-high pressure water jets and recovers the water and debris in an environmentally sound way. The addition of a simple, easy to use cruise control for the robot has allowed significant increases in productivity and stripping quality. The robot has been extensively tested on a 21 m by 9 m steel wall built for the purpose. To date, the robot has driven over 160 km and has been extensively tested over curves, welds, and other obstacles. This testing has been invaluable in refining the robot to produce a machine which has a good chance of succeeding in the hars realm of a shipyard.
