This paper provides a detailed insight into the meshing noise characteristics of a chain drive for motorcycles and also explores effective countermeasures to reduce the meshing noise from the drive system due to chain/sprocket impacts. Sound pressure and sound power measurements were performed on a roller chain drive in order to reveal the dominant noise generating mechanisms. The relative importance of driving noise to driven noise and the unsteadiness of driven noise are illustrated experimentally. Using an in-house developed predictive approach for chain drive noise, the driving and driven noise are quantitatively identified. The sound pressure level of the noise attributable to the surface vibration of two sprockets is calculated and compared with that due to the impact response of engaging rollers. To cushion the chain-sprocket impact and achieve a significant reduction in the meshing noise level, modifications in the sprocket design are proposed, and their effectiveness in reducing the sound power of the chain drive is investigated experimentally and further validated using the predictive approach.
