Laser welding (LW) is an innovative method of the joining technology for various engineering materials including polymers and thermoplastics. Currently, this advanced method starts to make its first efficient steps into wide industrial applications including automotive. After successful applications in the processing technology for various metal (steels and light alloys) and ceramic based materials, lasers are now reaching new targets for polymers and thermoplastics. LW technology of thermoplastics is relatively new, in comprising to others joining techniques of plastics, such us linear and orbital vibration, spin, ultrasonic, hot plate, hot-gas and extrusion welding. Previously we reported to the SAE'99 our findings on selections of nylon (polyamide) based plastics for laser welding (LW) technology. In this current paper, we will try to increase the understanding of the engineering community regarding the usefulness and applicability of an advanced LW technology (and developed thermoplastics), and its increasing use in various automotive applications.
