This paper addresses the problem of optical detection of local non-homogeneities in solar cell assemblies (SCA) for space applications using a modulated laser induced photothermal reflectance microscopy technique. Experimental data show the high sensitivity of this technique in detecting local heterogeneities and defects in the SCA transparent layers. A mathematical model developed based on the reflectance variation at each SCA layer interface describes well the signal behavior as a function of the modulation frequency. Simulated results show good correlation with experimental data. A proposed methodology for SCA analysis and inspection combines both the developed mathematical model and the experimental laser induced photothermal reflectance microscopy technique.
