Around 20 % of all vehicles produced world-wide are coated with 1C and 2C polyurethane coatings due to their extraordinarily high quality level. PU clearcoats excel by their high resistance to acid rain (etch) and other chemicals. The appropriate selection of polyol and polyisocyanate allows control of hardness, glass transition temperature and resistance features. With increasing hardness e.g. the etch resistance improves and the scratch resistance is reduced. Overcoming this difficulty of diverging scratch resistance and etch resistance is only possible through increasing the cross-linking density while at the same time keeping a low Tg. The use of tailor-made polyols could lead to car clear coats with improved scratch resistance. This paper looks at this and other approaches to improving scratch resistance of polyurethane coatings and also compares different methods of testing for scratch resistance. Nano-scratch testing is used to explain differences in results between different scratch test methods and correlation with damage from commercial car wash facilities.
