In the field of nonferrous wire drawing final products for the automotive, electronic, computer, telecommunication and construction industry are manufactured. Beside other parameters like wire quality, drawing dies, capstans, machines the lubricant is one of the key factors influencing the drawing process. The lubricant has to fulfil requirements to support the drawing process but also various secondary aspects like e.g. environmental compatibility are important. The wire drawing lubricant is an important tool and investment. As a result it should be viewed and treated as such to get the maximum return on the investment. The composition is based on these requirements and varies with the different application. Depending on the diameter of the wire the above requirements will change. Thus for a thick diameter the reduction of friction is decisive, whereas for the thinner diameters a good flushing effect is of major importance. This means that the percentage of additives such as esters in coolants, which are used for thicker diameter ranges, is considerably higher than for those additives which are applied for thinner wire diameters. It is obvious that a key factor like the lubricant has to be maintained during the drawing process to ensure a high quality output.
