Over the last twenty years, electromagnetic modelling has grown from being a purely academic exercise to become a primordial technique in system design and development. Many digital methods are available today for solving fundamental electromagnetic equations. This article offers an equation-free guide to electromagnetic modelling for the inquisitive reader. Elementary techniques are fast being enhanced by promising new approaches involving breakdown into complex-geometry domains. Digital code users thus enjoy increasing decision-making power, with methodologies and tools adaptable to specific requirements.
