Multilayer deposition on anodized aluminium coils by means of electron beam PVD (e.g. SiO2, TiO2) for reflection enhancement is a well estabilished industrial process. This work reports about recent multilayer deposition results obtained with an air-to-air coil coater. A new multilayer black coating on the backside of reflecting aluminium strips has been developed (MIRO-LUX). The new material has optical properties superior to those of the commercially available alternatives. By employing the Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) technique, light absorbing layer sequences were deposited on the backside of highly reflecting aluminium coils. The total reflection of this multilayer system is less than 5 % over the visible spectral range and remains practically unchanged after an exposure of the coating at 400 deg C over at least 200 h. The adhesion properties of the coating are also excellent. An aluminium cap with functionality on both sides could be used in the modern automotive clearglass headlight systems.
