Smart materials are a class of materials that change their properties with external stimuli and are therefore used as actuators in various fields. Currently a lot of effort is spent worldwide to further implement systems and structures based on these materials in modern passenger cars in order to reduce annoying noise and vibration. In this publication it is presented an overview of some classes of intelligent materials - shape memory alloys, piezoelectrics, electro- and magnetorheological fluids. Basic properties and performance features are described and the potential for the reduction of vibrations in modern passenger car vehicles is highlighted.
