In this paper a torque strategy used by RENAULT for the control of a spark ignition engine is presented. The new strategy implies a completely different philosophy concerning engine management. In the past and depending on road conditions, the vehicle user opened or closed the butterfly valve, and the different control variables tried to adapt to the new operation conditions of the vehicle and the engine. Nowadays, the driver steps on the accelerator and really only sends a signal demanding a different value of torque. Considering the entire set of variables and conditions of the vehicle, engine control establishes the new operation point of the engine: butterfly valve position, advances, injection timing and so on. With this new strategy for engine control it was necessary to develop a new motorized butterfly valve. Requirements for the design are very strict: an accurate and rapid positioning of the valve is necessary, mainly at idle engine operation. The paper explains the development process, which involved the application of experimental and modeling tools. The corresponding mass flow rate through the engine under different operating conditions was calculated using the ENGINE CARD code. The development of this strategy is the result of research projects conducted by collaborators from the Departamento de Estudios Motor of FASA RENAULT Valladolid and the research group IMST of the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia. This continuous collaboration dates from 1993, and focuses on the design of the intake systems used in the different engines manufactured by FASA RENAULT.
