Hydrogen for fuel cell powered vehicles seems to be a promising alternative to the gasoline driven internal combustion vehicle. An Assessment of the new technology compared to the conventional technology must consider the whole systems in order to prevent trade off situations from one environmental problem to another. Thus LCA seems to be a valuable method to investigate such systems properly. The paper is focusing on the fuel production and its utilization in the operation phase in fuel cell powered buses. It presents a cradle to wheel assessment of different hydrogen production routes and diesel, the utilization during the operation of a bus with either a EURO III complying combustion engine or a PEM FC.
