Within resent years there has been an increase in the use of NDT methods to detect defects and anomalies of various structures, ranging from bridges, and road, through road and railway ballast, and even detecting archaeological remains. One of the infrequently used NDT techniques in this country has been infrared thermography, whilst in the USA and India infrared thermography has been used successfully used. One of the most perceived limitations of infrared thermography is that in this country it is too cold to use this technique. However with the advancements in modern technology it is possible to detect smaller changes in temperature (down to 0.1 deg C). This paper will discuss some of the fundamental theory behind heat transfer and thus infrared thermography, as well as investigate some potential application areas of infrared thermography.
