The enormous pressure on costs, also caused by cutthroat competition is compelling shipping companies to make drastic economies. Nowadays, basic calculations, design as well as production of large-bore Diesel engines is not longer imaginable without computers. Also protection and control of the engines is, today, controlled PLCs and operation of the engines is supported by PC-based computerized tools. This tendency is rapidly increasing. It is the subject of this lecture what MAN B&W did, does and will do in this connection: CoCoS (Computer Controlled Surveillance), a PC-based tool for maintenance planning and spare parts handling; EDS (Engine Diagnostics System), a diagnostics tool for performance analysis and advanced engine monitoring; SaCoS, a flexible and fully parameterized safety and control system. Furthermore the future in this respect will be discussed: emission regulations and their implications; remote monitoring, diagnostics and access; condition-based maintenance; optimized engine operation in different modes. The next 5 - 10 years will show that the same development as occurred in the automotive industry over the past 10 - 15 years will also occur in the large-bore Diesel industry.
