The findings presented here highlight some interesting themes and patterns in terms of how car and component makers interact during the new product development process, and about the challenges of adopting collaborative product development in the Western - in this case, the European - automotive industry. The benefits of greater supplier involvement in the engineering of new vehicles have received much attention, and many car makers are actively taking steps in this direction. However, at least amongst the component makers covered in this study, the picture is of gradual, rather than cataclysmic change. This contrasts with some of the Japanese-inspired manufacturing reforms of the 1980s and early 1990s that diffused relatively rapidly. Product development lead times in the West are becoming shorter, modularization is creaping in, and there has been a wave of mergers and acquisitions amongst first tier component makers, partly in the light of pronouncements about global sourcing on the part of the car makers. More demans are being made on suppliers.
