Rollover accident is a complex event and the occupant kinematics is often difficult to predict. Field accident data analysis of crash events shows that the vehicular rollover generates a broad panorama of injuries including occupant(s) ejection resulting in a higher risk of fatality and a higher probability of risk to suffer severe injuries. This means an effective occupant protection system needs to deal with many diverse requirements such as impact minimization, impact cushioning and ejection prevention. The paper describes state-of-the-art sensing technologies and corresponding injury countermeasures to help provide optimized protection for both belted and unbelted occupants in a rollover. The integrated occupant safety system concept, which is the 'Collision Unavoidable' portion of the overall Integrated Safety System approach includes an array of sensors and predictive algorithms for an early restraint activation decision while considering 'out of position' occupants. Selected real world roll conditions are reconstructed using math models to understand design parameters to help minimize the possibility for inadvertent restraint deployments. The discussion focuses on the methodology of the crash and immunity evaluation leading to the necessary and timely deployment of countermeasures including airbags, seatbelt-pretensioners, load limiters and a family of seatbelt cinching devices.
