Rollover accidents are responsible for a significant percentage of occupant injuries. The purpose of this paper is to review a portion of the available field data for rollover accidents, propose a set of system level objectives for occupant protection and discuss the configuration and performance of a system designed to fulfill these objectives. In light of the field data, the introduction of a rollover occupant safety system in passenger cars and light trucks could contribute to a significant reduction in fatal and serious injuries. The issue of a restraint system for rollover crashes is to reduce the probability of occupant injury, but there ar several other fators to consider. First, the crash data indicates that all vehicle types may roll and they may roll for any numbers of turns, usually less than one. This indicates that rollover restraint systems need to be designed for all vehicle types. Second, the vast majority of fatalities are due to occupant ejection. Third, belted occupants may also sustain serious injury during rollover events from intruding objects or striking ground as the vehicle rolls. The method of occupant retention and protection, suggested by this paper to be an inflatable device, must have design characteristics that are consistent with the factors indicated. TRW has developed a new rollover protection system. The TRW rollover curtain system is designed to provide occupant protection in both side impact and rollover events. The rollover curtain system consists of an inflatable curtain that is positioned to provide coverage at the side window glazing of the vehicle, an airbag inflator, associated mounting hardware, bag positioning tethers and a bag positioning track. The performance of the rollover inflator (ROI) offers key performance advantages over hybrid and pyrotechnic based inflators in achieving rollover system performance objectives. The advantages are faster initial gas delivery, low gas temperature, tailorable ballistic performance and minimal variability.
