The territory of Latvia is situated near the geographical centre of Europe. This means that its distance from the Russian gas fields is greater than 3000 km, while from those of Northern Europe - only 1000 km. The geological structure of Latvian territoy is a unique one, because it allows siting new highly reliable underground gas storage facilities (UGSs). At present, in Latvia there is functioning one UGS with an active capacity of 2.3x109 m3 of gas. This storage provides non-stop gas supply for Latvia and, partially, for the neighbouring countries during the whole year. In future, it is possible to site in Latvia a new UGS (or a network of storage's) with an active capacity for gas of 50x109 m3. Such a huge storage could become a basis for a new, economically substantiated, concept of gas pipeline building that would provide a high level of gas supply in the scale of Northern Europe as well as Central and Eastern Europe. In the work, we analyse the existing as well as newly proposed schemes of suppling europe with gas, and present the results of research concerning UGS's - both exisiting and potential. We also consider the UGS from the viewpoint of economic efficiency in the context of gas supply systems of Europe and Latvia. The conclusions are drawn that would serve as a basis for international cooperation and help to attract investments for UGS construction.
