The developments in rig mechanization and their effect on improving safety and operational performance were considered. Soft PLC control systems, power frame system, mechanized casing and tubing tongs, and stabberless system play a important role in rig mechanization. Safety and effiiciency of the conventional rigs were improved on integrating the stabberless systems it its operations. Safety goals were achieved in rig mechanization by distancing the persons from the hazardous locations. Four major driving forces behind rig mechanization are safety, economics, legislation and safety economics.
