The scope for application of sintered parts in motor vehicle transmissions is about to change significantly: manual gearshift transmissions absorb a large portion of the relevant parts in Europe for their synchronizing systems. These gearboxes, however, are expected to be gradually replaced by other systems. New potential for sintered parts comes from new materials such as sintered aluminium or from parts to be made with advanced pressing techniques. To enhance the reliability, consistency and predictability nowadays required, examples are given how the test methods and the study of failure modes of sintered parts can be improved.
