The design of future large civil transport aircraft - the Megaliners, poses a technical challenge in the disciplines of flight control and aeroelastic control. This report gives a detailed analysis of the coupling between flight mechanic motion and aeroelastic deflections, and offers a robust integrated flight and aeroelastic control law as a possible solution. For the example aircraft, a heavy, very flexible, four-engine civil transport aircraft, a nonlinear model describing both the flight mechanic and the aeroelastic behaviour of the aircraft is derived. The integrated control law (MIMO controllers for the longitudinal and the lateral motion) is designed using microsynthesis. Special attention is given to robustness with respect to changes in aeroelastic frequencies and damping. The control law is implemented on a flight simulator and the closed loop aircraft behaviour is analysed both offline and in manned simulations. In short, the report contains the fundamentals of flight and aeroelostic control for civil transport aircraft and a highly sophisticated example control design.
