Emergence of world-class car manufacturing with high growth potential, is fast changing the steel scenario in the Indian market. Demands are rapidly increasing not only for world-class steel quality, but also, for new grades of steels to suit to the changing needs of manufacturing technology and energy efficient, light weight car bodies. This paper examines the impact of these changes and resulting demand on steel quality in the new millennium. In future, keeping in view the energy scenario, mostly IF based high tensile steels for body panels and dual phase and other steels of very high strength up to 1400 MPa for structural parts will be in demand. To provide longer life to car bodies, coated steels will also be required. Newer processes like laser beam welding, tailor blanks, hydroforming and various IT aided systems, will also demand sophisticated steels. In addition, supply chain management to meet customer's exact requirements on an hour-to-hour basis is another feature, which is receiving attention. (VDEh)
