Crash resistance objectives lead PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN to use ultra high strength steel for the front bumper of the new Peugeot 607. The use of a specific high strength steel with good quenching properties and a hot stamping process allows PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN to lighten this bumper. Indeed, the weight reduction is more than 2 kg compared to a conventional high strength steel solution. After a complete austenisation of the blank in a 900 deg C furnace for several minutes, the part is stamped then quenched for a few seconds in the same water cooled tool to obtain a martensitic structure (yield strength over 950 MPa). The benefit in crash resistance is high due to the increase in the elastic behaviour for low speed impacts and to the improved stiffness for 15 km/h urban crash.
