The German marine technology project Data Transmission in the Ocean and Sensor Technology (DOMEST) in the deep sea was initiated in May 1997 to address the increasing technological demands and to combine long-term time-series measurements in the deep sea with real-time data access and dynamic sensor control. Within DOMEST, a highly interactive system was developed that allows the users a nearly real-time data request and wireless remote control to sensors installed at great water depths via the internet. This approach enables instant data access and device control to long-term deployed sensors with considerably shorter reaction times than before.
