Considerable excitement has recently developed in the automotive industry for Variable Valve Actuating (VVA) systems. These systems are being considered as a means of achieving better fuel economy, reduced emissions and better engine torque management. As Original Equipment Manufacturers search for the highest value VVA systems that meet these needs, suppliers continue developing and displaying an impressive variety of VVA technology solutions. This paper describes the on-going developments of the Delphi mechanical VVA system that was first presented at previous Aachen Colloquia. Recent mechanism developments that will enable higher engine speed and lower friction will be described. Combustion chamber alterations that should improve low valve lift mixture motion without sacrificing full load engine performance will also be described. In addition, a test vehicle has been constructed to confirm the predicted vehicle benefits of the mechanical VVA system and to determine the best engine management system configuration.
