Substantial improvement in development duration of vehicles plus an increase in product quality will be achieved in the future by an intensive use of computer-based simulation and development tools, from concept through to production. Very important factors for marketing a new vehicle are optimal driveability, comfort and sound quality which, until now, could be neither measured objectively nor simulated, with the result that optimisation required prolonged experimental test programmes based sometimes even on trial and error, but in any case not included in simulation processes. Vehicle driveability calibration is a bottleneck in the actual development processes using platform concepts. AVL has developed in the past few years methods and on-board instrumentation tools for the objective measurement and simulation of vehicle-driveability and driveability character (AVL-DRIVE), noise quality and brand sound (AVL-VOICE). This publication provides an overview of the scope for using the two tools in every day project applications, with illustrations of areas in which both systems have been applied successfully in development projects.
