The first commercial HEV(Hybrid Electric Vehicle), Prius made by Toyota Motor Company, has doubled the FE(Fuel Economy) of the Japanese standard driving pattern compared with an equivalent conventional ICE car. The objective of the study is to evaluate actual performance of efficient HEVs in real use conditions, in order to estimate an overall effect on energy consumption by promoting such low emission, high efficient HEVs. lt should be noted that FE of HEV depends significantly on the running conditions because any additional energy consumption has relatively larger effect on it. By this investigation over one year, the actual FE has been observed for various driving conditions about weather, temperature, road condition or use of auxiliary equipment such as air conditioner. To clarify the effect of electric motor drive train, e.g. capability of idling stop, regeneration, or optimum operation of engine and motor drive system, complicated energy flows between generator, batteries or motor are also measured. The total run distance in the interval reached over 20000 km, about one fourth of which was recorded by an on-board data logger. The fundamentals such as initial warming up, auxiliary equipment, and regenerated energy are investigated. Due to the very sensitive characteristics of FE of HEV, it is important to evaluate the performance compared with a conventional ICE car exactly in the same condition. A comparative analysis with an equivalent conventional car in actual driving in Tokyo city area is carried out, and its result is shown. The comparison of FE of the HEV with the equivalent ICE car shows that FE of the HEV realized 1.6 to 2 times better FE than conventional ICE cars at normal speed city driving. In general, the improvement of FE by HEV is factorized by 20 % improvements by idling stop, 20 % by regeneration, and 20 % by engine and system optimization which add up to 50 % decrease of energy consumption. From those results, the appropriate use conditions for such HEV to improve overall energy consumption in a country are suggested.
