The future of individual motor car traffic is strongly dependent on the availability of fuels as well as on the ecological balances of the drive system, i.e. fuel consumption and overall emissions. Advanced combustion engines with catalysts and filter systems still offer good perspectives, and they also may be fuelled from regenerative sources. Their main drawback is the poor performance in partial load operation. Moreover, legal regulations are expected requiring true ZEV/SULEV standards to be kept by a certain percentage of vehicles sold. Today this seems possible only with electric drives operating from batteries or fuel cells. From an overall ecological point of view, however, the fuel supply system has to be included in the emission balance. On such a basis battery EVs and FC based EVs are somewhat doubtful. Hybrids combine the advantages of ICEs with those of electric drives, avoiding most of their specific drawbacks. Their main advantages are the avoidance of partial load operation of the ICE as well as the use of the existing infrastructure for fuel supply. Moreover there is the ability of operating as a ZEV in restricted urban areas. Series hybrid configurations offer the highest degree of freedom in the choice of components and of flexibility in operation strategies. Therefore we chose a series hybrid electric configuration for our drive train test bed. It respresents a real scale drive train of a compact car with typical driving performance. The high voltage of the buffer circuit (600 V) reduces converter and machine losses. Additional power stores like supercaps or a flywheel can easily be integrated. This setup allows the characterization of components as well as the development and optimization of various operational strategies.
