The aim of this project is the design development of floating wind turbine systems, which enable the economic generation of electricity from wind power in sea protected locations (as for ex. inside harbour areas). The factors, which favour locating wind turbines in semioffshore conditions, are the availability of higher wind speed and the less severe environmental and social constraints of such areas. However, this offshore choice entails some major disadvantages such as high capital costs for foundations, submarine or highly protected cables for connection to land electric grids and high running and maintenance costs. The current design attempts to provide a new technical approach that improves the link between the flexibility of siting and the floating energyproduction systems. To accomplish this task, the authors suggest to adopt a barge, a pontoon or a similar floating hull, temporarily or permanently anchored at a specific site, equipped by a medium-size horizontal axis turbine, and eventually electrically integrated by a diesel generator set in a container on its side. The complete assembly would then be towed to the selected site and connected to the electric grid (if the case) after mooring in free waters with a catenary chain or to a sea bed fixed pile or to a quay inside the marine areas. This approach would facilitate the solution of many problems which arise from the activities of a commercial or touristic harbour. Indeed, the energy produced by wind-generators could supply directly the harbour works also in case of heavy weather conditions outside. The flexible location permits its displacement to any other site inside the harbour allowing all the maintenance works to be done on docks and breakwaters. Another aspect in favour of this solution is the use of existing pontoons. These floating hulls could be obtained modifying an unused floating-crane pontoon as provided with a structure suitable for bolting the wind turbine tower onto the deck.
