The Fraunhofer IPA in collaboration has built a large-scale UV test plant for coating of 3D work-pieces. Eight microwave-powered lamps can be adjusted flexibly by an especially designed positioning system to almost any geometrical condition. The automated control allows for a reproducible positioning of the individual lamps. Examples of UV-coated 3D parts for the automotive sector include UV clear coats on metal and plastic car body parts, on hub caps and on acrylate tail-light lenses, and use of pigmented single UV coatings on parts made of TPO (thermoplastic olefin). Presently, series applications include UV primer coatings on plastic headlight reflectors prior to metallizing and coating of polycarbonate headlight lenses using UV curable clear coats. A computer simulation model is presented by which the distribution of UV irradiance and dose across the surface of a given 3D work-piece can be calculated and optimized. The radiation field of an individual UV lamp, measured by the UV device Power Pack, is used as input for the model. It remains to be tested whether the numerical simulation may be used to perform a fully automated optimization of the lamp positioning and to optimize the lamp movements by robots.
