High efficiency in a 3-wheel electric forklift truck has been studied. The new, oval-shaped 3-wheel electric forklift truck features high power (gradability 19 % loaded) and high speed (14 km/h loaded) without extra energy consumption. To achieve these features, the energy consumption had been analyzed. The result shows that the traction is a main factor, occupying 75 % of the energy. A separately excited motor is used instead of series winding. Individual control is used for the armature and field currents to achieve a high-efficiency traction drive. A trench-structured IGBT module (insulated gate bipolar transistor) makes the chopper quit and effective. Low viscous coefficient oil applied to the drive train reduces viscous friction loss. These features will be applied to all forklift trucks.
