Short notice given only, substantially as follows: The United States Air Force and the United States Navy are evaluating the use of cast ductile iron for use in 500-pound-class General Purpose Bomb bodies. Currently those bomb bodies are produced by a single source using forged, welded pipe. The successful completion of this program for cast production offers the benefits of an expanded industrial base, comparable or reduced unit cost, and seamless integration. The key technical issues for replacing wrought steel bombs with cast ductile iron bombs were system performance, system mass properties, and material properties. Cast ductile bombs must be a direct replacement for the existing wrought steel bombs with no changes in the aerodynamics, ballistic performance, or effectiveness. Material properties were also of critical importance. The fragmentation characteristics of ductile iron when subjected to the high strain rate of a detonation were a major concern. A trade-off between material strength, material ductility, low temperature toughness, and producibility was conducted prior to selecting an ASTM A536 grade 60/40/18 ferritic ductile iron as the material of choice. The technical effort to date has shown that cast ductile iron is an acceptable material alternative for 500-pound-class bombs. The current estimates for 500-pound bomb body purchases by the Air Force and Navy indicate that the Department of Defense could purchase 76 million pounds of high-quality cast ductile iron bomb cases over the next seven years.
