Although deposit control additives are widely used in many European gasolines, a continuing need exists for aftermarket gasoline additives. Gasoline additization levels vary significantly even within the European Union. A significant share of the gasoline market contains no deposit control additives at all or a low level. These gasolines create engine deposits, which can cause a variety of problems including upsets to driveability, power and fuel economy. Furthermore, newer vehicles incorporate modern engine technologies which tend to be more sensitive to these deposits. A suitable aftermarket additive concentrate can provide very rapid total engine clean-up. Data are presented which show that the removal of these harmful deposits can restore vehicle driveability, power and fuel economy. In more recent years, engine deposit problems have led to new categories of vehicle upsets, such as combustion chamber deposit interference and inlet valve sticking. Data are presented which illustrate that an aftermarket additive can be used to eliminate or minimize these engine problems.
