The induction hardening depth and the result of the grinding process of forged camshafts must be measured. For the measurement of the induction hardening depth the authors use the ''low frequency eddy current'' method. It was investigated, whether the Barkhausen noise method could be used for the specific workpiece to detect grinding burn. The investigation showed that the authors had to record the Barkhausen noise amplitude over at least one revolution of the camshaft. All those signals could be separated in 5 signal categories. By comparing these categories with the results of the destructive methods, they were able to correlate a metallographic cause to every category. The good results of this investigation caused the use of the ''low frequency eddy current'' method (measuring the induction hardening depth) and the Barkhausen noise method (detecting grinding burn) in a combined test rig.
