This paper describes an idle speed control system with real time torque estimation. The objectives of idle speed control system design are considered. The nonlinear model of the plant and the non-linearities of the system are analyzed. The torque estimation procedure, based on an engine torque model, is described. The nonlinear control strategy enabling the system linearization is proposed. The control system design, based on linear and nonlinear models of the plant, is described. The control system stability analysis following the control system design utilizes the Popov theorem. It justifies the control system design. The application of the feedforward controller improving the system performance is considered. The rapid prototyping equipment is used to simplify the system calibration, evaluation and the practical implementation of the proposed control strategy in vehicle.
