In this article a discussion is made on the new federal driving cycle for emission tests. In previous columns the new methods that were promulgated in july 1970 for collecting and analyzing motor vehicle emissions are discussed. At that time the federal government also proposed a new dynamometer driving schedule that they modified slightly and promulgated on novemeber 10, 1970. In this issue we must ask (1) is it a good test, (2) how does it compare with the old test, and (3) what emission standards are required by the new test to accomplish our present and future goals for emission reduction.
