Gain and noise temperature are the most important electrical quantities in antennas for satellite communication ground stations. Various factors which depend upon the type and construction of the antenna decrease the antenna efficiency, resulting in a lower gain than theoretically possible. In designing antennas great care has to be taken to avoid unwanted sidelobes which may increase the antenna noise temperature considerably. A number of different approaches to antenna design are discussed and several existing or planned antennas for ground stations have been examined in detail with regard to the factors decreasing the antenna gain and increasing the antenna temperature.
