A small, flight-type gas chromatograph unit incorporating a gas volume meter for monitoring in-flight respiration of the astronauts within the apollo spacecraft has been developed. An analysis of carbon dioxide and oxygen is completed within 30 seconds. the gas analysis system consists of micro components, including a packed column capable of separating oxygen and carbon dioxide with a flow rate of approximately 2 cc/min, a small, light injection valve with zero dead volume, a thermal conductivity detector, and an amplifier system that integrates the areas of the components of interest.
