The ariel 3 satellite (Originally the uk-3), launched in may last year, is now providing an earth-orbiting platform for measuring and transmitting back to earth a number of physicel parameters that cannot be deduced from ground observations. This paper outlines some of the many facets of the ariel 3 satellite prorgramme and stresses the reliability needed and achieved of electronic equipment and describes the launch operations at the western range in california.
