Small two stroke vehicles form 67 % of the total vehicle population in India and consume about 55-60 % of the total gasoline. The use of alternative fuel in these vehicles is very important and extensive work is underway at IIP. Laboratory studies have shown that upto 15 % methanol in gasoline can be used in existing small two stroke engines. However, for a comparable driveability M12 was found to give same driveability demerits ratings. An extensive fleet trial on 14 vehicles (consisting of 8 mopeds, 4 scooters and 2 motorcycles) of popular makes was undertaken to study the vehicle performance, material compatibility and long term effects of M12 blend. The vehicles accumulated 1.5 lath kilometers in a 1 year programme. This paper presents the results of the study. The results show a very good startability, driveability and participants acceptance of M12 fuel. The fuel economy of M12 vehicles varied from +8 to -2 % compared to gasoline. The power output remained unaffected. In general, CO emissions were lower by 14 to 33 % and unburnt HC by upto 5 %. An increased ring wear varying from 50 to 200 % of gasoline data but similar wear in case of chromium plated rings was observed. There were no major problems of engine deposits and material compatibility. The study establishes that M12 can be used in existing small two stroke vehicles without any modifications.
